
2013 Broken Earth Limited Release Syrah/Viognier
Broken Earth produces a number of Rhone-style blends and our estate Syrah block is a critical component of each of them. Typically, a parcel of Viognier fruit is “co-fermented” with Syrah to add texture, and fruit notes as well as assist with color stability. This ferment is normally around 12-15% Viognier but is diluted to less than 3% in the final Rhone blends.
For this blend a small volume was retained at the pressing of the fruit, and prior to the main blending. It was bottled separately as something special for our Limited Release Range. The wine has a mass of ripe berry fruit with a hint of florals and a texture normally quite foreign to red wine. The 13% Viognier component has a dramatic effect on the wine’s structure.
