2012 Broken Earth Merlot
Merlot has been the subject of much criticism in recent years. It is one of the ‘noble’ varieties and, as such, should be treated with much more respect. Many people comment on the “Sideways” movie (2004) and its impact on Merlot but it was more a ‘self-fulfilling prophecy’. The early versions made from this variety showed so much promise that it became an overnight success but this success resulted in the massive expansion of Merlot production and sadly the release of many poor quality examples of this fantastic varietal.
The proliferation of mediocre Merlots led to many consumers abandon the wine altogether but we have the utmost respect for it and proudly present our interpretation. Our 2012 Estate Grown Merlot gets your attention immediately with its bouquet. There is an abundance of sweet black cherries, combined with spicy oak, both of which flow through the palate. There is a mass of fruit with great length of flavour and supple, supporting tannins. Fresh, balancing acidity ensures this wine is a superb companion to many food dishes with a particular affinity to game.
As is the case with all our Estate Range, the wine may be enjoyed now or, with careful cellaring, will further develop depth and complexity
